Since I left Silver State Helicopters in Dec. 2007, I have only built about another 350 flight hours. Though the last 3 years has been the most exciting and rewarding of my still young flying career (mountain and high density altitude experience, introduction addiction to aerial firefighting and utility work in heavy and medium helicopters, law enforcement, agricultural work, almost 150 untimely turbine hours and gaining affiliation with some of the best people in our industry), I still have personally been able to average only just over 100 hours per year of flight time. And in terms of becoming card-able to fly with an interagency card, I’m still just over half way in pilot in command hours.

While this was a terrible experience for the child, the audience/electorate suddenly understood in no uncertain terms that he was a man unfit to lead the country. Sometimes in life moments of grace, epiphanies, whatever you want to call them, appear in the strangest circumstances. Human risk assessment evolves all the way through our mid-twenties. High risk behavior is much more common before this age. Study after study has confirmed this.
That said, I do believe that some of the high risk personality traits are set for life in many pilots. As I have gained experience in Flight instruction, I have come to realize that some pilots are going to ‘misbehave’ no matter what I teach them. I frankly tend to raise the standards with them until they go somewhere else. What are the most common activities leading to fatal accidents. Unnecessary maneuvering Flight (showing off), running out of fuel and VFR into IFR conditions are some of the biggest culprits. Extra instruction is not going to solve these problems. I can show a student the dangers of maneuvering Flight. I can teach a student how to properly manage fuel and leave a safe reserve. I can teach him how to understand weather reports and give clear guidelines on go/no go decisions. Once the student is on his own, the judgement is all his own. What I can do is be prejudicial and to some extent I am. If I think I see a pilot who is not going to use good judgement I take a long hard look at them. If they don’t show me the better side, I don’t teach them. There has been this grand idea floated around in the last couple of years that general aviations poor safety record (as compared to commercial aviation) is due to bad instruction. I don’t think this idea has any basis in fact. I think rather that it is driven by a desire to eliminate freelance competition to the 141 schools and funnel new business towards a new technology by creating new requirements. One of the biggest proponents of this grand idea are owners of Redbird Simulators and part of their solution is, guess what, more required simulator time. I frankly don’t see how simulator time for private VFR pilots will in anyway change the accident profiles of the big three fatal accident causes I outlined above. In fact, if it substitutes for actual Flight time I think it will increase the accident rate. Do you want to know how to decrease the accident rate. Do what the pros do. Require two experienced pilots for every Flight. Have complete oversight on all Flights. Have specialists do weight and fuel calculation and weather. Fly only on instrument Flight plans and ATC control at all times. Don’t like the sound of that. Well I don’t either. But if you are going to have the freedom in GA that we do now, you are also going to have pilots that use that freedom in an unsafe manner. Now here is a grand idea, as part of our license check rides, we have a way to really assess a prospective pilots judgement.

Blogs are usually associated with an Internet nonsense. That’s what people write pages of such sites is not located in the head sometimes. Nonsense on bzdurze, it is difficult until it is all to embrace today – there is nothing to hide, it certainly does not put the authors in a good light.
For several years, always searching for a specific message clears the blog, because I always considered it a kind of spam that is high in the search engines – just marketing exercise to promote writing nonsense. A bit silly to me now admit it, but my perception of blogging world I have a bit search. A few days ago I came to arcyciekawego blog. Looking for news in this particular topic was not easy for me to get to the valuable service, because in reality, such a little, little of that – even the press releases to journalists known for at least brief and based more on legend than expertise. A surprise here. I watched, read i. .. I’m surprised uniqueness of that service. In it is not only a lot of wisdom, but on the texts useful to all people like me. People who rely on the knowledge contained in the network (not to sit for hours in libraries). Beware the Jabberwocky, my son, warned Lewis Carroll. I have never even met a jabberwocky, much less had to beware one, but recently met a Jabiru, and saw nothing to beware. I know not what a Jabberwocky is, but a Jabiru is an Australian light sport aircraft (LSA), and a pretty one.
The experience of training of operating an airplane is often once-in-a-lifetime thing. You get a fantastic feeling sitting behind the controls of a small airplane and seeing through the window the familiar features of your city or town passing beneath you, slowly. It is just as amazing as looking at clouds three-dimensionally.
Clouds appear that much larger when you actually fly amongst them. It makes you feel tiny, and provides a stirring reminder of how fantastic a world we live in. If you seriously intend to join a pilot program, you deserve congratulation for your ambition. Decisions made at the start of training have possibly powerful repercussions on the quality of your experience and in fact on whether you ultimately succeed or fail.

I have my PPL as well and have been torn between continuing ratings at an FBO, ATP or ARI-Ben’ ATP’s recent merge with Gulfstream academy turned me off from them ‘ that is considered the undercut route. (In the Gulfstream program, students pay for right seat time in a Beech 1900 ‘ and that Flight is actually making money, it’s a scam) This doesn’t help the piss poor entry level pay at the regionals at all.
Anyway I visited ari-ben a few months ago, and loved it.
Ultralight Flight Training

Recognizing that this new fleet of S-LSA training aircraft wouldnt materialize overnight, FAR section 91.319(e) permitted the use of properly registered and newly N-numbered transitioning aircraft, now sporting E-LSA airworthiness certificates, which had been used for flight training prior to the adoption of the SP-LSA rules to continue to be used for flight training by the same owner until January 31, 2010, upon which date the Operating Limitations permitting flight training would expire and further use of the aircraft for flight training would no longer be permitted. It seemed reasonable then to believe that six years would be long enough to get the new S-LSA trainers into service, and for existing trainer owners to get their investment out of their machines and purchase new training aircraft.
